Itinerary Two: Across the Water!

Day 1
Pick up camper from agreed location and hit Dingwall for some supplies.  Then head north on the A9 to The Storehouse to grab some seriously good lunch and a bit of their chocolate beetroot cake which is to die for!  Head up to Dornoch an exceptionally pretty town with an outstanding golf course and a fantastic sandy beach to walk off that cake.  There are plenty of places to grab a bite to eat before either taking it easy and finding a camp site’

 

Day 2
Leaving Dornoch head up to Golspie to visit Dunrobin Castle – a fairy tale castle which is home to the Countess of Sutherland.  Head to either Gills Bay or Scrabster in plenty of time to catch your ferry (which has to be pre-booked – advice can be given!).  Cross the Pentland Firth and arrive on Orkney Mainland.  Have a look at www.visitorkney.com for ‘What’s On’ and ‘Where to Stay’.

 Day 3
There are several must dos when on Orkney – one is visiting Maeshowe – this is the finest chambered tomb in Western Europe.  Tours last about 45mins and involve a bit of a clamber through a narrow passage way – to be avoid when your are pregnant with twins (which I was)! 

Head onto the Ring of Brodgar, one of the finest stone circles in the world!  Have a wonder around these stones and if you feel the need, give them a hug! 

 Day 4
Another must do – a visit to Skara Brae.  This is an incredibly well preserved stone village containing an intricate maze of dwellings, with stone beds, lintels and cupboards all intact, and dates back some 5,000 years. The site was revealed in 1850 by a violent storm and is now one of the most famous Neolithic sites in Northern Europe.  The visitors centre is really well done and there is a good little restaurant there.

Skara Brae

Day 5
A visit to Scapa Flow is a must – there is a Roving Eye (http://www.orknet.co.uk/rov/rov.html) which will take you over Scapa Flow and allow you to see the wrecks in their resting place.  They will also take you to the fantastically informative Wartime musem at Lyness on the Island of Hoy.  Spend the next part of the day visiting the Italian Chapel – built by Italian Prisoners of War and a totally amazing site to see.

 

Day 6
Final day!  Spend the morning visiting St Magnus’s Cathedral in Kirkwall and having a wonder around before heading down to Stormness for a wander around before catching the boat back to the mainland.  Spend an easy night at the campsite just outside Thurso.

 Day 7
Early start to head back down to Inverness to ensure that the camper is returned spick and span before 10am!
